Spotlight Sunday: Rachel Snyder

This week's Spotlight shop is Rachel Snyder from Katrialy
I took a look at her shop and she is so modest about etsy. She takes beautiful pictures and makes cards and little figurines. I was impressed. I would also recommend reading her blog- it is funny and has good ideas.

From her profile

I'm a daughter, a sister, and the proud and loving owner of one very special cat. I love musicals and Disney movies. I believe that "I Love Lucy" is a classic and belongs in every DVD collection. I have a tendency to Collect things, but I do not like clutter. I want to save the manatees. I've been sculpting and selling my clay figurines to friends and family since 2002. My love for photography and paper crafts extend as far back as my elementary school years. I have more recently become interested in floral design (2006). I am also interested in a variety of other crafts and dabble in them on occasion. I work on commission! Feel free to contact me regarding custom orders.

I really like her shop- and I think my favorite thing is The Gerber Baby Print

How did you get started on Etsy?

I remember hearing about it from someone while I was working for Disney last year and thought, hey, why not?

Tell us a bit about yourself.

I'm a BYU alum and still (happily) single. Not real sure how that happened, but I have few complaints about it! Last year I did an internship at the Disneyland resort as a photographer and loved having that experience. I am the owner of one crazy cat, and when I am not at work or out on my hammock, I like to surround myself with things that inspire my creative juices. I also love to travel!

Apart from creating things, what do you do?

I enjoy playing the piano and reading, but, really, a lot of my time is spent at my Day Job. I'm also a bit of a collector and movie fanatic! A few of my collections include: sea shells, Precious Moments things, pop-up books, and Asian-inspired anything.

What first made you want to become an artist?

I've actually been creating things for as long as I can remember. I think it's just in my blood!

Please describe your creative process.

Actually, I don't think I really have a "process" exactly. It's usually pretty random and sporadic.
not everyone can take such beautiful pictures when they are random and sporadic. I like it. (that's me talking- the writer of the blog post)

What handmade possession do you most cherish?

I've got a crazy quilt that my great-grandma made when my grandmother was young. I also am kind of attached to my temple apron, because my grandma hand-made it for my mom, and then it was passed down to me. My grandmother died a few years ago, so it's nice to be reminded that while I can't see her now, she is not that far away and we will be reunited again.

How do you promote your work?

This is something that I'm actually not very good at. I used to try to get on the Etsy chat rooms at least twice a week, and I try to be active in my teams, but other than that, I guess I mostly depend on word-of-mouth. I should work on improving this!

Name your top five books:

Reaper Man
(and all the other Discworld books, but especially that one) (Terry Pratchett),
The Chrestomanci Chronicles (Diana Wynne Jones),
The Enchanted Forest Chronicles (Patricia C. Wrede),
To Kill a Mockingbird (Harper Lee),
Tennis Shoes Among the Nephites (Chris Heimerdinger)
How does your faith influence your work on Etsy?

I try to create only those things which are "Beautiful, lovely, or of good report, or praiseworthy." I also like to share the beauty of the world that God has created, and I do that through my photography.

What advice would you give to artists who are new to Etsy?

Don't give up when things aren't working out the way you planned.

In ten years, where would you like to be?

Honestly? I have no idea! Hopefully by then I'll be convinced that marriage and the idea thereof is a good thing, and maybe have a child or two. I also hope to have been able to achieve my dream of traveling throughout the Orient by then, but we'll see!
What is your favorite item from your shop?

Totally love my Eeyore figurines.

What are your top five favorite shops on etsy?

In no particular order, as follows:

How has selling on etsy changed your life?

I have met some great people that have been very supportive and also that inspire me to do more and be more.
